Welcome to Is This Available? by Dana and Maria, our weekly blast about something we find on Facebook Marketplace.
Staten Island, New York
Staten Island has often been associated with negative stereotypes such as being a “dump” or the “forgotten borough” or where “Pete Davidson filmed his 2020 comedy drama The King of Staten Island”, (a movie that everyone apparently hates except for my 86-year-old Bubbe). These stereotypes can be used to create humor, but they can also perpetuate unfair generalizations about the culture, people, and items that Staten Islanders list on Facebook Marketplace. This generalization however might stand. On Staten Island there’s more space: More space → more furniture. More furniture → more textiles. More textiles…Lots of this.
There are no cityscape clean lines, bold colors, or metal accents in these prints. Michelle’s woodland prints reflect rather the mystery creatures lurking beyond the facade of the fifth borough’s suburban illusion.
Maria’s Miss of the Week: In the name of creature features. I bring you toadstool mushroom and gnome table with 3 stools. Dog not included.
