Welcome to Is This Available? by Dana and Maria, our weekly blast about something we find on Facebook Marketplace.
Portland, Oregon
The location function is an endless source of fun on Facebook Marketplace. You can change your location to anywhere in the world and browse their local feed. I always do this when I travel but sometimes dabble in worldwide treasure hunting from the comfort of my home.
Right now I’m traveling. On Friday I return to the big apple cheese cracker after two weeks in the pacific northbest. I’ve been looking at a lot of trees, considering the moss and pointing at mountains. Nature is a spectator sport. While I love being here (family, cats, moss) and am lucky to visit often (work and sometimes play), when I leave I usually feel ready to go (albeit the distance has seemed to grow as I get older). But this go around there’s something new that I am so sad to part with, something that’s going to make 3000 miles feel like 4000, Portland’s facebook marketplace.
Even thought we can browse FBMP feeds from anywhere, the majority of exchanges are local and the shipping function is not guaranteed. This is a huge b-u-m-m-e-r because it seems like everyone in Portland buys high and sells low. As far as NYC prices go, the appraisal system here is backwards.
If I could fit the following steals in my suitcase I sure as heck would:
Kermit the Frog telephone, $100. Need I say more?
Coffee Table, $30. One of a kind
Time Machine Chair. $125. Incredible value. This would cost $1,000,000,000 in NYC
2 bed 1 bath house boat, $100,000. I don’t think this could even exist in NYC
Butterfly Cabinet, $150. Crazy town
Westinghouse Electric Range, $500. Think about how this is only $100 more than a 5Qt KitchenAid stand mixer…
Solid Wood cart, $100. This extra counter space could live on for generations, unlike that IKEA crap we’re swimming in
MCM wassily designer chairs, both for $450. The frames seem real but the leather might be duped…either way…
