Welcome to Is This Available? by Dana and Maria, our weekly blast about something we find on Facebook Marketplace.
New York, New York
Just because I don’t have a driver's license doesn’t mean I don’t covet a vintage Subaru Forester. I mean…you can see it, right?
I can chalk up my lack of a driver's license to a lot of things. My adorably walkable Brooklyn upbringing, my generous roommates in Ann Arbor, Michigan, my political attachment to the idea that cars are evil, my tolerance for the Greyhound bus, my dad christening himself “Jewber” when he pulls up and rolls down the window of the historic Previa, Rav-4 and finally, the Tiguan of his dreams.
With all flowers to my loving, driving, friends, family and Midwest-grown boyfriend, my inability to drive as a woman in her late 20s, could also have something to do with the fact that learning to operate a giant metal death-machine is a bit weightier once your prefrontal cortex is fully developed. Maybe I would have felt a little more like Olivia Rodrigo or Charli Baby if my biggest worry was being able to drive myself to a parking lot to hang out or getting to second base with a boy from Algebra II. (Apologies if this is not the vibe of suburban adolescence – I am going off movies and memories of teen horniness). Either way I think my fear of Causing Death is a little bigger than my fear of Seeming Uncool to A Boy Who Doesn’t Think About Me is a big factor in why I don't drive a car YET. I promise I am determined to learn. But in the meantime, I am interrupting my digression to highlight a vehicle that you don’t need a license to operate.
Maybe my nostalgia is in overdrive today, but this fly Landspeeder rewinds me to a time before prefrontal cortex development and even before puberty. I could see myself in this on the lawn of my cousin’s house in a mystical land called Delaware. Maybe my precocious little sister is in the passenger seat singing “Hold on tight it’s a magical flight,” which I would soon learn was not a dreamy road trip anthem, but the Sleepy’s jingle that played on the radio at home.
In honor of today’s driving theme, I’ve put together ITA’s first ever Spotify playlist for you. Here are some songs I love about driving and zooming and safely shaking ass in the front seat:
