Welcome to Is This Available? by Dana and Maria, our weekly blast about something we find on Facebook Marketplace.
Orangeburg, New York
This week’s object caught my eye for its cursédness. The status of this toy chest, with its scuffed trunk and gray cast over what one can only imagine used to be a gentle cream color.
It’s unsettling to encounter something child-affiliated that exudes absolutely no warmth or dare I say, cuteness. It is nearly impossible for me to imagine any person, young or old, deriving any shred of glee from this.
I firmly believe this toy chest should be tested for lead paint and even if no lead is detected, I don’t really think that it should be near a child for fear of a lifelong curse (I am a recent first-time viewer of the Exorcist.) And if you, dear reader, are sensing my disdain for adults who seek and collect objects made for children, I raise you the newsletter in which I reveal my love for Calico Critters.
All that said, the holiday is a time for youthful whimsy, childhood nostalgia and harnessing whatever weird little object that may not FILL the void in your heart, but may make it twinkle for a reason that is worth celebrating.
Dana’s miss of the week: no cursédness with this here Anglerfish sauna!
